Scar Remediation

There are many ways we may come to have scars, including from surgeries, injuries, accidents or body modifications. Some scars are held with pride, some with indifference; others may be associated with feelings such as loss, regret, fear, sadness, anger, or shame. Scars can result in thickening of tissue on the outside or inside of the body, and may cause dullness or lack of sensation, pain or discomfort with touch or movement, or restricted or modified movement. Some people express a sense of disconnection from the area of their body affected by scarring, and scar remediation can be an opportunity to re-make a relationship with their body.

In sexological bodywork, scar remediation tends to focus on scars related to sexual organs including urinary, abdominal, genital and anal areas, but can have positive effects for many different kinds of scars on the skin or within the body.

Giving time and attention to scars can be a process of integration and healing, and can incorporate exploration of sensation, sexual enjoyment and greater embodiment.

My approach is gentle, collaborative and guided by your body.  Your relationship to the scar guides the work, so that sessions occur at your pace, based on your intention for having scar remediation. The approach combines mapping (a way of becoming more attuned to the ‘geography’ of the scar) with massage to soften and release scar tissue. This can increase blood and lymph flow, bring more sensation and mobility to the scar and surrounding area, and free up more pleasure and ease in your body.
